Why bother making it in space if you are going to bring it back down?
There were 'plans' for a similar work. The plan was to have solar cells in the space, and the generated energy would be beamed down to earth in the form of low-intensity microwaves, which could be redeemed back to electricity. This process required much less space on the ground than conventional solar cells.
The reason for having the solar cells in space is the intensity of light is much higher than that on earth (the atmospere absorbs and deflecfcts some rays) Also the solar cells could theoretically produce the same amount of energy from dawn to dusk.
This is the most I know about this 'plan'
