I live "off the grid" meaning I generate my own power using PV panels. The weakest link in the chain of this system is batteries.
Better battery technology is crucial to making a complete system completely sustainable.
The other option is to store the power as hydrogen and use a fuel cell instead of batteries, but the cost for that is even more than batteries right now.
i think that would be a brilliant idea, i think the best place to collect solar power without wasting too much space is outside the earth atmosphere, build some sort of satellites that could do that job and power line connections connecting back to earth :)
