Anybody have information about a hydrogen generating solar disk?

Question:
Some time ago a saw only the final moments of an item on tv about an invention in development. It's a sun disk that fits on the back of a jeep. Sunlight is supposed to be lead from the disk to a chamber were water is broken down in hydrogen en oxygen in the "sun chamber". The problem is they couldn't find the right material for this chamber because it gets about 2300 degr C. in the process. Unfortunately I don't have the solution, but still I like to know more about it. I've been looking all over the web, but I just can’t find anything. Maybe someone over here knows where I can find more info on this?

Answer:
I wouldn't begin to try and evaluate the feasibility of such a device myself, but I have found several patents that answer to the description. My degree is in Environmental Management, not Physics, but I think the three sites below explain it pretty well, between them.

Additionally to the enclosures, if you use the term "Photolysis" in any good search engine, it should bring you up some pretty definitive entries, entering the year 2006 gives you the most recent stuff.

Photolysis (Photo = light, Lysis = breaking) of water.

This a patent for such a device

If you want to know about its feasibility, and you have some background, I suggest that you read the US Govt.'s own paper on it.

If you have no background at all, you may find this useful:

Wikipedia describe it thus:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/photolysis...

and evolution of Hydrogen by Photolysis, is discussed at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/photohydrog...

Also, try to do a search on "patents photolysis of water"... fraid I haven't the time, I am trawling for other environmental technologies myself, at the mo'.

Hope this helps a bit to get you started, though!

Good luck!

yes
you have been lead astray.
there is no such thing.

the first thing to realize is that it takes just as much energy to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen as was created when the hydrogen burned in the first place.

if you could get that much energy from the sun, then you'd be driving a solar powered car.

AND, if that's not enough, when have you seen the sun heat anything to 2300 degrees? Even a black car sitting in the sun in Phoenix rarely gets to 150, or so.

What i don't understand is, why do a very large number of people abandon all reason and think this is true? If it were so easy, then power companies would be doing it. if it were true, then home units to power your house would be selling like hotcakes.

this question comes up pretty near every day. but it's just not believable.

there is no such thing as a perpetual motion machine.
if it were possible to burn hydrogen, and then "magically break the water down into hydrogen and oxygen again" to burn again, everyone would be doing that.
Even if you think that the oil companies are suppressing the technology, China doesn't honor our patents, and they would be doing it big time.

does everyone want to fix the price of gas so much that they'll believe anything?
i love your picture!!!
lord of the rings is like the BEST movie
You know caveman, I wasn't trying to prove any religious point in that question, in fact I stated that I wasn't at all religious. Spiritual maybe, but not religious. You refering to me and trying to make me look like a dumb as* doesn't bode well with me.
Thanks for being a jerk, and I'm glad you're close minded, it makes you far less dangerous.
