The first person known to history to have done this was Aristarchus of Samos. The idea lay dormant for 18 centuries until Copernicus revived it in a book published in 1530. Kepler proved it mathematically in 1608, and Galileo proved it observationally in 1611, reporting this in a book called Sidereus Nuncius in 1612.
