Laptop with Solar Charged Battery Enviro Friendly?

Question:
In the long run, will using a solar charger and buying an extra battery (so I can charge one battery while using the other) for my laptop be more or less enviro friendly? Specifically, will the benifit of using the solar charger outweigh the cost to the environment of producing the extra battery and then dispossing of it in the future?

Answer:
My professor once told me that there is no such thing as free energy. To create a solar powered battery, it will take an emmense amount of energy to make the products that go into it. In the end, the components will break down from normal wear and tear and you will have to get another one.

To show you an example of what I mean, did you know how much energy it takes to make a 12 oz coke can? Enough energy for you to watch your TV for 3 hours, and that is just for an aluminum 12 oz can, imagine what all goes into making a solar powered battery system.
Good idea..more people should look at the realities of solar use and environmental conservation. I dont profess to know all the answers, but I dont think that buying an extra laptop battery and solar panel will save money, conserve any energy or be environmentally friendly. Your accurate it will do more harm to the environment in the long run, unless you use this solar system to power more than just your laptop. Dont buy an extra battery for your laptop.

If you want to be environmentally friendly when it comes to your computer, change the bulb in your desk lamp to a Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb.
There is something called EROI, or energy return on investment. It is a wat to look at what the net gain or loss of energy is in a certain activity. In your case, the energy retern would be the amount of energy you are able to get from the sun with your solar cell.
The invested energy is the amount of energy it takes for the solar charger to be created. This includes production, shipping, etc.

If the amount of energy you can get from the sun is more than what it takes to create the charger and the battery, then yes, it would be more environmentally friendly.

A better idea might be to buy a more efficient battery that needs to be recharged less often.
Hey! Boss,
I really dont know if it is really enviro friendly or not but, I am sure it will be wallet friendly in long run.
