How many solar cells would it take to charge a battery to make a car go 60 mph?

Question:

Answer:
it is not so much the number of solar cells, a small 1.5 watt charger will charge a battery, but it is how much storage of power you have to produce the desired results. You would probably need a few 900 cca (cold cranking amps) batteries to make a car do 60 mph for any length of time, because you will need some pretty powerfull motors to get those results. the more cells you have, the faster you can charge those batteries, tho. if you are thinking you can do this with just solar panels alone, and no batteries, it would take a LOT to produce the kind of amperage needed to power the motors neccesary to move your car. I dont think it would be very efficeint. you need batteries to store that power.
Well if you consider that they have done so already by putting solar chargers on the roof of prototypes... it would take as many as the space in the roof of the car... then it depends how big a solar cell is on average
It's not the number of solar cells. A single, small 12 or 24 volt solar array will charge the batteries. The questions to ask are:

1. How fast do you want to charge the batteries?
2. How much current is required to operate the motors?
3. How far do you want the car to travel before recharge?

Answer these questions and I can give you the amp/hour capacity of the batteries needed, and the charging system to keep the car running.
