It boils down to the operating life of the solar panel, the efficiency of the solar panel and the energy needed for the manufacturing process, all of which vary for different manufacturers or technologies.
what are u trying to find a way around our oil crises? I would say the making of them probably uses up more energy than they produce becuse the factor of effeciency and consistancy of they solar panels produced energy is too unstable, Clouds, rain, night time etc.
Yes!, you are right in order to make the solar chips, we have to Bake them for a very long period of time under high heat. & yes that one solar chip that we spent a lot of energy on, will not make that much energy. . But the overall outcome. . is great.

Unfortunatley, this technology is not used widley in the USA yet. .due to climate conditions. I was @ a CDG seminar in BLR recently. & learned that Kirloskar is teaming up with German technology to Power entire vilages with solar power in Asia.. & a lot of water heating systems use solar now. All the Street Traffic lights, & highway markers are solar powered. So, we are saving a lot of energy in the long run.
