Great start! My first novel, "Progeny", started out when I was in high school (1986-1990) but I never finished it until two years ago. It's available through my publisher AuthorHouse as well as any online retailer.
I did realize when I went back to the manuscript after fifteen years that the story was still effective, but I needed to polish it because I didn't want it to SEEM dated. It worked, and as I kept asking "What happens next?" I wrote and wrote it into a novel. You've got a great story here, and I'd be happy to help you fine tune it as I can without keeping this from being YOUR story.
If you're looking for a publisher after you're done or want some help organizing things now, feel free to check out AuthorHouse. I certainly don't regret it!
it's a very simple story line, maybe more suitable for the monthly graphic novel genre (comic book), than a book proper.
Ummmmmm have you considered making this into a series of books instead of one ginormous book? That's all.
What's the question? But if you are just sharing, keep going with the story. Break it down to serial.
