I think you are talking about the Aurora Borealis. That is also not necessarily a "reflection" of the solar winds off the Earth mag. field. It is true that the solar winds influence the "northern lights", however, it is due to an interaction between Earth's magnetic field and the plasmatic solar winds. As the solar particles hit Earth's atmosphere they ionize and dissociate the upper atmosphere, this in turn creates attraction/repulsion of atmospheric particles as they begin to react to the Earth's mag field due to a flowing electric current caused by the ionized air. This motion causes collisions with atmospheric particles, which cause light. The light you see is mainly from collisions with oxygen and nitrogen. It is a very basic idea of what is going on, but they are more than beautiful to see, especially on a completely clear, cool night.
