Question:
The main house at the Solar Living Institute had South facing windows with large overhangs over them. Explain the purpose of both of these. Make sure to discuss the tilt of the Earth.

Answer:
The south facing windows allow heat to enter from the sun shining in during the winter months when the sun is lower in the sky. During the summer months when the sun is higher in the sky, the overhangs block direct sunlight from entering thus keeping the inside cooler. I have seen many houses set up this way to maximize heating and cooling systems.
