Is anyone looking into making (much) more affordable solar panels?
Question:
Answer:
The cost for a solar system is still very expensive and I think beyond what a family can afford. On the American Solar Electric web site the lowest priced system is a 2.6 Kw system (4,700 Kw a year) for $7,947 and based on my cost per Kw (.10) I would save $40 a month.
I'm trying to get these folks to come out to our house and give us a quote so I can verify what I'm seeing on their web site, but no one has called me back.
yes
i think people are working on that but they have to be hand made so the labor cost is probably what raises the prices.
There's DIY kits. I'm thinking about putting one on my electric scooter because I hate waiting to charge it.
The materials and the electricity used to make them is what is driving the costs. Don't bother waiting for the prices to drop anytime soon because it just won't happen.
I remember hearing about a flexible film they were working on. And I think I remember hearing something about 15 cents per linear foot. Not sure how wide the stuff is, though.
They're looking. but I don't see anyone tinkering with them. Yes, only the rich could afford them for so long, the technology is still expensive, the repairs and maintenance are still expensive, and they could have been vastly improved (and cheapened production and cost-wise) many times over through the years. Just like TVs. But of course all the big oil and auto companies lobbying congress all the while played the large part preventing solar and all the other wise technologies from sprouting new interest in both government and people as a whole. It takes money to develop technology, and our Governments (meaning Europe too, they're just as guilty) looked the other way as they fed the fat cow and fed themselves. Frankly, I believe it's too late. Because the pace at which government moves to make change, we'll never see the right things happen before the hurricane blows our houses into the sea.
they aren't too expensive, but yes, I am looking at them for my lights on the front and rear of my house
for the person who lives paycheck to paycheck it is easier and lots cheaper to do a little research online and make them yourself
Here is a lot of information from a solar company. You can have them built right in a new home.

SunPower SPR-215 solar panels are uniformly black, and beautifully designed to blend into their environment. SunPower solar panels are the highest efficiency available. Powered by our A-300 solar cells which are more efficient compared to conventional solar cells, SunPower solar panels produce more power in a given area. Our higher solar panel efficiency allows customers to put more solar power on their roofs, using less space.
