probably as big as the us becaus right now solar panells only get 5% efficency. that is not a reasonable source of power if you are really interested in other forms of power check out an older issue of popular science. check their web site they did a design competition a while back.

Better to have solar panels on each home that has enough southern exposure, and then battery back up for evenings.
A home properly set-up can be off of the grid for the better part of a given day, if done right.
Problem is cost to acquire. The governments that offer subsidies are great but they are not enough to be affordable for most persons. With costs around 50k it takes a long time to recover the cost of just buying electricity. HOWEVER, cost is only one factor. Being off-grid, saves the environment, as we reduce coal and other non-green fuels to produce electricity.
