If we live in a space colony at L5 or L4 how often would a total solar eclipse happen?
Question:
Answer:
Since a lunar eclipse only happens when Earth's shadow falls on the Moon, that will always be at Full Moon (it would appear full to the people on Earth, but not to the people in the space colony). Any space colony wouldn't be big enough to cast a shadow covering the entire Moon - in fact it probably wouldn't be big enough to cast any shadow on the Moon.
If you're talking about the lagrange points from Earth and the Moon, then a solar eclipse will happen whenever the Earth blocks your view of the Sun, which will be once a (lunar) month (you'd be orbiting Earth at the same rate as the Moon orbits Earth). The Moon would also block your view of the Sun once a (lunar) month, creating a solar eclipse.
Are you meaning the L4 and L5 points of the Earth-Sun system, or the Earth-moon system?
