Solar water heat is realtively easy... you set up a grid of pipes in a box with a glass face. Connect that to your water heater tank in a manner that sets up "natural convection" and let the sun do its work.
A large water tank that is well insulated and a large grid can provide most of the heat for a house in the winter in some areas (mild winters... such as the area I live in) Run pipes and valves to radiators in the house.

To set up solar electric power generation just takes money... pay for 5 years worth of electricity at one shot and you can get the equipment for your needs. If you average $300 a month electricity... you need $300 * 12 * 5 = 18,000 worth of equipment.
Solar panels. charge regulator(s) batteries, voltage inverters... and give up a large part of your garage ( or add the cost of a shed) for the batteries.
