Has anyone ever seen a total solar eclipse?
Question:
Answer:
I've seen two total solar eclipses, one in Quebec in 1963 and one in Libya last year. If there is ever an eclipse within travelling distance, go and see it. You can't look directly at the Sun during the partial phases, but usually there are special filters available which are safe. Once the Moon is fully covering the Sun, it's perfectly safe to look at with your naked eye, and is one of the most amazing spectacles you will ever see in your life.
It's a tragedy that the media put such a scare on people about looking at an eclipse, since it's perfectly safe during the total phase, which is the most beautiful part.
Yep. It was pretty cool. It got dark like twilight.
me, some fat guy jumped off the diving board at the pool
no but im pretty sure that would be so cool! =]
id imagine its beautiful
i haven't. but i heard they come like every 75 years. or something with a 75.
i have seen a few.
its really cool
expecially when you see baileys beads
no
I always thought if you stared directly into an eclipse you would go blind. That's what someone told me. So I'd imagine no one has actually seen one directly. You have to look through something I think.
I was in Moscow Idaho about 20 years ago during a total solar eclipse. The day turned to night, the street lights came on, it was really eerie. It lasted for about 5-10 minutes before it became light again.
Here is a video of one in Turkey. Watch it, not the same but about as close as you can get.
Sure is eerie to experience one in persons.
I saw one several years go, we video taped it in time lapse, it was really something to behold. I just checked out NASA's web site and it looks like one will be able to be seen August 1st of 2008. Mark your calendar *wink*
Yes, the people who saw it.
I seen one. I was at q-marts, And it happened, every one was stairing at the sky and I asked what was going on. They said "its a eclipse." I was scared cuz it was different for me. What happens is some shaddow from another planet coveres the moon so You wouldnt see the moon and every thing turns all black in the sky accept the stars. And then the moon slowly appears again.
Yes. Backyard in a suburb of Rochester, NY. Early afternoon. Did the pinhole-through-cardboard projection. Was most impressed that I could make that work. (c.1954?) (That's checkable. I'm not doing the research.)
I've seen a few. My dad is an amateur astronomer and when I was a kid we took a family vacation one time specifically to see one. We were driving in Northern Wisconsin on a two-lane state highway when it started. My dad pulled the car over in a clearing and we got out to watch it.
He had brought his telescope and attached this special filter so we could look through it and watch the Earth's shadow move slowly in front of the Sun. It got really dark, like at dusk, and the crickets started chirping. That was wierd.
Since I was a kid at the time, I remember getting board with it before it was over. But now, looking back it was a pretty cool thing to see.
I saw one as a child with my grandfather. He brought home a welding hood from his shop and he and I sat on the patio and watched the whole thing! It was awesome! Not to mention it was something really special to share with my grandpa! Thanks for the question that sparked such a wonderful memory!
I have seen a couple of them. The lighting gets softer and the temperature cools down a little as well. My co-worker had a telescope and we watched it for quite a while. (His telescope had the proper filters to prevent eye damage!) It is something I'll never forget. I was able to see the outline of the moon as it crossed the sun. It was very surreal. It is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
yeah, back in 1999. when the moon gets between the earth and the sun, a ring of light surrounds it.
