Domestic Hot Water

Solar hot water systems are most commonly used to heat water for basic household needs such as laundry, bathing, dishwashing and cooking. These systems are commonly referred to as "domestic hot water systems".

Domestic hot water systems typically use solar energy to pre-heat the water that is incoming to a conventionally fueled heating tank. The warmer the water from the solar heater, the less conventional fuel will be needed to provide the household's hot water needs. During the summer months, a properly sized solar hot water system will provide almost 100% of a household's needs. In the winter, or during extended cloudy periods, the amount of hot water provided by the sun may be 30% or less. Solar hot water professionals tend to install systems that meet between 60% and 70% of the annual load.

Solar collectors (center) flush mounted on residential rooftop.

The size of the solar collectors suitable for your site will depend upon the manufacturer and your hot water usage, but typically they will require between 50 and 100 square feet of mounting area. The most common mounting technique used today is install the collectors flush with the roof on a south facing exposure. Alternatives, such as ground mounting, or rack mounting on gable ends are also sometimes possible.

Space Heating

Solar water heaters can also be used to provide space heating. The same set of solar collectors can be used to provide hot water for both space heating and space heating needs, although space heating will generally require a much greater collector area and storage capacity. Additional controls and heat exchangers are also needed. Due to these extra costs, and because sunshine is relatively scarce when heating loads are highest (for example at night and during the winter) solar energy is more often used to heat domestic water than it is for space heating.

Solar Hot Water Space Heating

A solar water heating professional with past experience in installing systems sized to provide space heat can help you consider the pros and cons of various options. You should also make sure to carefully consider passive solar and other building efficiency measures that will reduce your heating loads to help you take maximum advantage of the available solar resource

There are several ways to use solar energy in your home. One way is obviously to mount solar panels on your roof, and have those supply power to some of the devices inside of the building. Another thing that some people do is use solar energy to heat water, which can then be used as a heating system for your house. There is a lot of information available on the subject. Try starting out by reading here:

I'm all about helping the "normal" people go "green". Meaning, us people who don't have thousands upon thousands of dollars to do it with. So. If you can't afford solar panels, or solar water heaters, what about going with the solar powered lights for your front walkway? I was just at Target and I saw a set for $89.
It is very expensive . The panels need to be secured to the house roof so that a high wind will not blow it off. It could cost 15,000 easily and be sure to separate each panel with a diode sufficient to carry the power. This is if a hale stone hits one panel and shorts it out it will not short the hold system.
I assume you are asking how to size your system.Solar is more expensive than other forms of electricity, precisley because it does not have the long term embedded subsidies and tax breaks that all other producers have.
How I determine the size of a solar array for a residence is first find out the budget-what can you afford? Then look at what you consume-How much can you afford to offset-take into account federal(if any), state/provincial incentives(if any),
personal(are you incorporated?can you business buy the solar?)
from this you can determine how many watts you can afford- budget 12-13 $ a watt installed-a 1 kW array will run approx. $13,000. 1kW will generate around 1200 kWh a year in the Toronto area, and will earn $490 through the Standard Offer Program(Ontarios performance based incentive)
A 1 kw array will require 15' feet of roof space ,54" high, and some room near the breaker panel for the inverter.
Hi
a while ago i was also intersted in building a solar system at my place and in this regard i collected some very useful info, basic solar energy concepts to detailed solar system formation and installation, which i have published on this site FreeSolarOnline you can go there and check it out hope you gonna find it useful
