Infrared solar radiation is responsible for keeping the earth warm - without this heat the nitrogen, oxygen, and other gases in the atmosphere would be frozen, and the climate would be completely different.
Lake effect snowfall happens when cold dry air travals over a large body of water (Lake Erie for example) and picks up the water vapor - it is then deposited on the shore on the opposit side of the lake (generally).
