Well, it doesn't occur at night. It occurs when both the moon and the sun are above your horizon, otherwise, you can't see it.
A new moon happens when the earth and the sun are on opposite sides of the moon. Remember, the moon doesn't generate its own light--it only reflects the light of the sun. For the moon to block out the sun, it has to be between the earth and the sun. When it's in that position, the reflective side of the moon is reflecting the light of the sun away from the earth.
Also, new moon is when the moon and the sun rise and set at about the same time.
Full moon is when the moon rises about the time the sun is setting and sets when the sun is rising.
that's a lunar eclipse. they happen about every six lunar cycles (the new moon). the earth is between the sun and the moon causing sunlight not to reflect, hence it being dark. Most new moons are not in exact alignment to be considered eclipses during every cycle.
