Yes they are. Any excess sunshine they collect and do not use, gets stored until the sun goes in, allowing you to continue using the item at night/in the dark.
They are not bad... but only trickle charge, so it takes time.
The efficiency of the charging is also affected by how bright and sunny the day is. I run some outdoor lighting that will go 7 hours during the summer, but this reduces to less than 3 or 4 in the winter.

I have 810 watts in solar modules and they charge a large battery bank. The solar will run my window A/C unit, microwave, TV set, two lights, computer and network hub, cable modem and digital cable box while keeping the batteries charged so I can keep going at night. At times all this stuff is running at the same time but mostly just the A/C unit and a fan along with the network hub and cable boxes. We can run this way for weeks at a time but if needed we can always switch back to the grid if the sun is not strong enough.
So depending on what you are asking.. I say they do great.
