What most people don't consider when it comes to solar energy is it takes a lot of energy to create the solar panels.

Solar panels have to function for several years just to get back to the point where the energy they've created over their life equals the amount of energy that it took to create them.
1. Solar energy can provide electricity without the necessity of being connected to the electrical grid. So areas where electrical lines do not exist find that using solar energy to charge batteries can supply energy day and night. Solar energy can also be utilized by mobile vehicles such as boats, and can be used at sea eliminating the need to run an engine to power a generator.

2. Solar cells will, after a few years, produce energy over and above the amount of energy required to manufacture the solar cells.

3. The operation of solar cells does not itself produce any sort of pollutants or byproducts. The manufacture of solar cells is not free of environmental impact, and the combination with battery systems can produce some negative impact (lead, nickel, cadmium, etc) but overall solar energy is environmentally friendly.
