The Asian market is coming up with some cheap alternatives. Proberly, these better options will outcompete domestic ones that aren't as evolved.
We can, making them is easy, and its not expensive. they just don't work that the problem. Time to wake up to reality.

Solar power is not the magic wand that can easily be made to replace conventional power. To begin with, please note that the power in the sun is rather diffuse, and to concentrate it to any sufficient degree for use for about 2 kw and upwards requires considreable investment in huge solar panels (about 10m square space) as well as expensive storage cells. As up till now, it does not make economic sense for an individual to invest about US $ 4,000 in acquiring self-owned solar power generator when he can obtain power more cheaply from public power generating system. Should the time come when individuals pay as much for public power as they would for private solar, I believe more investment would go into the latter and therefore the cost too may fall. But for now, it is the law of economics and not one of technology.

Solar Energy is not THE answer it is part of a number of solutions. It is much greener to Limit Your Own Consumption of everything which includes insulating your home, using power sparingly, using energy efficient products and white goods.
Simple economy of scale. If you raise the market demand for solar panels to match the market demand for portable music players then you might see a revolution in technology. As it stands now solar panels are about 3 times the cost of using energy from normal sources. My electric bill is like $50/month. How could I justify spending thousands on solar panels?
Yes we can makeaffordable solar modules. It is being done every day.
The US government gave millions on top of millions to the Evergreen corpration to come up with a lower cost way to make the modules. Well they did it and at our expence, the tax payers expence. Guess what.. Look up Evergreen solar panels on the internet. You will find they cost as much as any other solar module on the market.
This is because of how our market system works. You charge what people will pay, not what it cost you to make the product plus a good profit. So it don't matter how cheap China or other Asian countries can make the solar modules. By the time the public sees the product it will cost the same as any thing else on the market. I'm the same way. If I could make a module for two pennys but people will buy them for $1,000 I would be a fool to sell them any lower. Plus someone would send a hit man to my home and shoot me for hurting their sales.
Then like said above. The government can not tax you on the power your create from your solar electric system so it is not profitable for them to help out the public.
Did you know that a car can run on water? The electrolizor was created over 100 years ago but there is no profit in it for the big boys because you can find water anywhere. To have water cars we will have to wait for the big boys to find a way so they can charge us for fuel before you will start seeing it on autos. Why put themself out of business right?
So our marketing system don' t ways work for us. It always works for the greedy.
because solar panels are not mainstream yet, when power gets too expensive to generate with souces like coal and oil and natural gas , solar panels will affordable . it's simple, tech costs a lot , but if you can sell it in mass quantity , the costs come down to a more affordable level and it will spur more reseach in better and cheaper panels because there will be lots of money to be made at that time.
I think Don k can see the big picture its all about greed . Take a look at a gallon of milk the farmer gets what 60 cents a gallon by the time its sold in the store its almost $5 DOLLARS a gallon . Everybody wants more more more and for what to get there kid a pair of $300 dollar sneakers that aren't going to last any longer then the$20 sneakers . What a big joke . The world is full of fools
Because the overall demand is not very high and thus the cost of development and tool up must be born by a relatively small number of consumers. This is the way the world works.

it is just that the powers that control us own petroleum ,and electricity and they want to milk humanity for all they can before they will encourage alternative energy methods
