Well, the make it move in the same exact relationship as the planets of our solar system, you could use different sized gears, although it would take a lot of hard work and research to make it perfect.
Well, that is pretty much impossible to make at home. And even if you had a workshop, u would need a mechanical engineer do design it. And still the sun and the planets would not be free from everything else, then would remain connected with a motor by some arm or wire.
You can make the planets to sacle but you cannot make their distances to scale. That is because a true representation of their distance will put Pluto and Neptune more than a mile away!
To make them move depends on your skill level and the tools you have available!
You can't really make one at home. The closest model I know is in front of the Air and Space Museum in the mall in Washington DC. It's to scale, and Pluto is over a mile away from the sun.
