The answer is - it depends.
Are you talking about PhotoVoltaic - to generate electricity, or are you taking about Solar Panels to heat water? Are you wanting to supplement other energy sources, or to supply the whole house? How big is your house? Where are you located? The size of the panels depends on the latitude of the site, and the weather conditions. More sun = more energy per square metre = smaller panels - less cost. Less sun = less energy = bigger panels = higher cost. If your roof doesn't face South, your installation will be less efficient and will need to be larger and more expensive. To design an installation properly, you need all of that information.
For solar water heating panels in the UK we have had quotes of between three and five thousand pounds
The prevailing average cost is between $25,000.00 - $45,000.00 (depending on output requirements). But why purchase if you can lease for very minimum cost = your actual consumption, no more no less ask me personally
