It can damage your eyes, even to the point of blindness. The light from the eclipse is different than from the normal sun's rays and that difference is so intense that it causes permanent damage to the eyes.
The rays from the eclipse will ruin your eyes forever!

The sun's ray during normal hours are so strong that you wouldn't be able to look at it for more than couple of seconds. But during an eclipse, the only rays that reach the eyes are of higher frequency. People will have a tendency to keep looking for a longer time and this is what causes the blindness. The theory that that sun emits some special rays during an eclipse is just a fallacy.
Sun light rays emit Ultra Violet "UV" rays which can dangeriously damage your eye retina. in normal days you can't look directly into the sun coz it's too bright, if you force to look then you'll burn your eyes blinding them temporarily or permanently if exposed for some time.
Cos the rays are highly ionisig/penetrating which will affect the parts of your eyes...

When you look at the sun on a normal day, the opening of your iris is small and that naturally protects it from harmful UV rays which still come. But during an eclipse, since it is relatively darker your eye widens allowing more UV rays to enter and damage your eyes
If you were to look at the sun right now on a clear day, you'll only be able to look at it for about 2 to 5 seconds before you have to turn away. Little damage to your eyes because you have to look away.
If you looked at the eclipse, you can stand and watch it for some time, and the amount of light coming from the elcipse (UVA and UVB rays), along with the longer time you can look at the sun will be enough to cause permanent eye damage. Plus when the eclipse ends, and you get that bright flash, it can cause permanent damage.
