Why does a total solar esclipe make you go blind if you look at it?
Question:
Answer:
The intensity of the light burns your retina.
even with or without eclipse you go blind if you look at it for a minutes.
or try this, put a flash light in your eye for a few minutes and see what happens ;-)
When the moon passes in front of the sun it blocks all but the corona which is the most energetic part of the sun's outer area. If you look at it your eyes will definitely be damaged.
It doesn't really make you go totally blind. It could impair you for a little bit, but it's because you don't think you can see the sun, but your eyes can still be damaged by it. Like you shouldn't stare at the sun ever. I'm pretty sure that's right.
a solar eclipse is when the sun comes much closer to the earth. the solar rays also known as uv rays are very intense and can cause blindness because extreme light exposure to the retina of the eye causes a mix in nerves
Your iris opens or closes in response to the total light reaching the retina. In an eclipse the total reaching the retina is small, but at select places on the retina the irradiation is very intense (the ring created on the retina where the image of the sun's corona occurs). At those places of intense radiation retinal damage can be done.
Looking at the sun for a long time can damage your eyes, eclipse or no eclipse. When the sun is fully exposed, the intensity is so big that we cannot tolerate it and are forced to look away. When the sun is partially covered, however, the intensinty decreases to the point that we can look directly at it, but it is still strong enough to cause eye damage.
Because the sunlight is still way too strong for your eyes to handle. Ever fried ants with a magnifying glass? Your eye is the magnifying glass and your retina is the ant! Doesn´t matter if the moon just happens to be blocking the sun. As soon as the sun peeks out from behind the moon your retina will start sizzling if you aren´t using protective glasses.
It is not looking at the eclipse that hurts your eyes, it is looking at the sun. Without the moon blocking it, no one thinks of looking at it. When it is dark with the moon, people look at it LONGER and this is what hurts their eyes. Given the same amount of time, it is safer to look at an eclipse than without the moon. But in any case your eyes are damaged.
