What total solar eclipse had/will have the greatest number of viewers?
Question:
Also, which total solar eclipse was/will be witnessed by the greatest percentage of the Earth's population?
How about the greatest population within the umbra at the same time? The next Tokyo eclipse maybe?
Answer:
Beijing, China will see a total solar eclipse on Saturday, September 1, 2035; Tokyo will just miss totality with 99.5% of the sun obscured.
Before Tokyo's next total solar eclipse, the city will see three annular solar eclipses (April 7, 2312, October 23, 2386, and August 4, 2502). Then, on Saturday, August 11, 2762, the sun will be fully covered by the moon for an impressive 6 minutes and 14 seconds.
Any eclispse observed in Asia and Europe should just about cover it.
The one which occurs when there is the highest population number on the planet, as population increases the more people there are to view it.
According to most estimates, the most populus city in the world is Tokyo in Japan, therefore any eclipse with Tokyo in it's path is likely to have a large number of people able to view it, but please be aware that in 1935 there was a solar eclipse over New York (but not all residents saw totality!)
The path of the total solar eclipse onf Aug. 21, 2017 will cross the USA from Oregon to South Carolina. That should get a lot viewers.
I think the april 2024 one is also a good candidate.
