What is solar energy?
Question:
Answer:
Solar power is the technology of obtaining usable energy from the light of the Sun. Solar energy has been used in many traditional technologies for centuries and has come into widespread use where other power supplies are absent, such as in remote locations and in space.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
Inexhaustible fuel source
No pollution
Often an excellent supplement to other renewable sources
Versatile--is used for powering items as diverse as solar cars and satellites
Disadvantages
Very diffuse source means low energy production--large numbers of solar panels (and thus large land areas) are required to produce useful amounts of heat or electricity
Only areas of the world with lots of sunlight are suitable for solar power generation
Solar energy is energy derived directly from energy
radiating from the sun.
Be careful, however. Virtually all energy on Earth
is derived from the Sun. For instance, oil comes from
plants which get their energy from photosynthesis
which is powered by light from the Sun.
However, people don't consider burning oil as
a form of Solar energy. Generally, Solar Energy
refers to large slats of material that convert light
directly into electricity through a chemical reaction.
"Photovoltaic cells".
That is, people put these slats on their roof or setup
huge panels which they orient to be directly
perpendicular to the Suns rays.
If they were cheaper to construct, we would simply
cover every possible square inch with them and
forget oil etc - but they are expensive and do
occasionally require maintenance.
The rovers on Mars (spirit and opportunity) are
both powered by photo-voltaic cells. JPL thought
that both robots would stop working after 90
days because their solar cells would get covered
with dust.
However, Mars also has wind, which occasionally
cleans the cells off - so, like the Energizer Bunny,
they keep going and going and going ...
solar energy is sun energy which can be converted into electricity and it can burn you from the uv rays
Solar energy is energy that is harvested from the sun by using one of many methods. Check out this sight.
