The real answer is either 8 or 10 (probably not 9). Mercury through Neptune gives you 8. There is still debate over if Pluto is a planet or not. Right now it is considered both a planet and a "trans-Neptunian object." There are at least 13 other notable trans-Neptunian objects. Pluto is the only one that is also considered by many to be a planet. There are decent arguments to be had on both sides. You could probably get some good class discussion by going and checking out the links I've provided, and arguing that there might only really be 8 planets. Many will actually argue that if Pluto was discovered today, we would probably not have classified it as a planet.
As for UB313, the jury is still out as well. It is larger than Pluto, and NASA says it's a planet. So if you consider Pluto a planet, you should probably consider UB313 a planet too. But then if you consider UB313 a planet, and Pluto is so much closer, is that really fair either? There's a really interesting article about this. It's the third link below.
