What are solar flares?

Question:
what do solar flares have to do with damage to satellites?

Answer:
A solar flare occurs when magnetic energy that has built up in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released. Radiation is emitted across virtually the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves at the long wavelength end, through optical emission to x-rays and gamma rays at the short wavelength end. The amount of energy released is the equivalent of millions of 100-megaton hydrogen bombs exploding at the same time!
solar flares happen when the sun's magnetic field gets so twisted up it finnaly breaks and it makes a promenece. But a flare is much more powerful and can cause damage to even the mars rovers
They represent the magnetic energy and interfere with the instruments on the satellites.
Basically to sum up what everybody is saying here "THE SUN FARTS"
A solar flare is a violent explosion in the Sun's atmosphere with an energy equivalent to tens of millions of hydrogen bombs.
The flares increases the ionization of the upper atmosphere, which can interfere with short-wave radio communication, and can increase the drag on low orbiting satellites, leading to orbital decay.
