What are the downsides of solar power?
Question:
Answer:
Traditional photovoltaic cells are very expensive, when compared to fossil fuel and nuclear power plants. The cost gap had improved in recent years, but it will still cost 2-10 times more to use solar power in most everyday applications (although there are some select applications where solar cells are cost-effective). The infrastructure to manufacture photovoltaic cells is also quite small, and many more facilities are needed before solar power will take a large percent of the power market.
good luck trying to generate solar power at night or on a cloudy day...and the square footage necessary to generate...it's not quite efficient
Expense and lack of affordable technology.
Since solar energy is not a concentrated source of energy, it requires large spaces to be saved. making a photovoltaic cell cost a lot. it cant be used at night. it takes a lot of time to be put into use.
Expense, clouds,&upkeep but it's all worth it to be off the grid.
pablodiablo1981 hit it on the head. The cost to build the necessary solar cells, the amount of space required to mount them and the relatively low number of manufacturing facilities makes the cost to benefits analysis a little too ugly to look at. However, if we take to time to do more research and create better photovoltaic cells, who knows what the future holds.
Less space to tan
It's expensive and unreliable. But there is a lot of research on-going to make the cells more efficient.
You have to purchase a big amount of accumulators to keep energy for cloudy days. The initial investment is quite big.
It is a problem to operate huge energy consumers at your home at once (air conditioner, boiler, air heater and so...). Today in Europe, it worth purchasing system like this due to government subcidies.
