How many planets are there in our solar system. Was one destroyed last year?

Question:
This question was asked in a quiz recently .

Answer:
There are only 8 left, because pluto is no longer a planet as of last year. This icy planet is now being classified as a "Dwarf Planet." There are over 40, dwarf planets. Definition of a planet: An object that orbits the sun and is large enough to have become round due to the force of it's own gravity. It also has to dominate the neighborhood around its orbit and pluto doesn't do that. It also has a tiny moon. (Charon).
There are 8.

Pluto, formerly number 9, was reclassified as a dwarf planet at a meeting of astronomers last year, but nothing was destroyed. Pluto is still safe and sound in the same place as it always was, we just don't call it a planet any more.
Officially, up until last year, there were nine: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Pluto was not destroyed. Astronomers reclassified it as a planetoid and not a true planet.
You asked a question, congrats.
Yes, one was destroyed. The evil Darth Vader blew up Pluto because he thought it as the hiding place for the rebellion. Poor Princess Leia had to witness the entire thing while in captivity on Darth Vader's Death Star.

I felt it happening. There was a great disturbance in the force. As is a million voices all cried out at once then went silent.
Since 1930, there have been 9 known planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. However, recently, there has been some discoveries of asteroids larger than Pluto, putting into question Pluto's right as a planet. Pluto is by far the smallest of the planets, having a diameter of 1.485 miles. However, it has a sattelite (moon) named Charon, which no other asteroids have. So there was a debate as to whether Pluto should be classified as a planet. What do you think?
17 planets in our solar system. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Eris, Pluto, 2005 FY, 2003 EL, Sedena, Orcus, Quaoar, and Varnuna
