Why are all the moons in the solar system named after Greek and Roman mythology?
Question:
Answer:
No, Titan is a group of gods. The moons of Uranus are named from people in shakespears plays.
At first, the Greeks and Romans thought the planets were gods, since their positons moved seemingly at their will. So they named them Jupiter, Mars, etc. So the pattern stuck. Most moons and planets are named after mythological figures.
NOTE: Pluto is -not- named after a cartoon dog, but after the mythical god of the underworld.
because they have the coolest names
They aren't...Titan is from a play
because most astronomers are a bunch of brain dead geeks!
Because Greek and Roman mythology still pervades our culture. Also most of the discoveries were made during the Renaissance when there was a massive "rediscovery" of Greek and Roman art and literature, so they named the planets and moons and such with those names in homage to that.
Imagine if the they were called regular names
hundreds of people (named Dave) would hide in their basements on hearing the news that Nasa was sending robots to probe Dave.
Because the way the soalr system is now is not the way it used to be, and these people really worshiped these planets. Why else would they call these tiny specks in the sky Gods? "OoooHh, look! That tiny speck moves slower that the other tiny specks!" Yeah, right.
The way things are now is not the way they used to be.
and as a tribute to western science and philosophy. It is all part of the Anglo European rule of powerful countries.
The people who name everything lack creativity.
