Mainly they are arrays of photovoltaic cells. The cells are made largely of the element Silicon.

Most modern commercial solar cells are silicon. Some expensive, high efficiency ones are made with gallium arsenide , which is a combination of the elements gallium and arsenic. Many other types exist too. See the source.
