How do solar powered houses store energy for nighttime/rainy/bad weather days?

Question:
How is it stored, and what is the device that stores it called?

Answer:
It depends on what you are using to collect the solar energy.

If you are making electricity using solar cells, the energy can be stored in batteries for use when there is no sun.

An "on grid" solar power system produces electricity during the day and feeds it back through your power meter onto the the power grid. Then at night you "take back" the power you fed onto the power grid.

Another method of collecting solar energy is heating water using solar collectors. The the hot water is stored in insulated tanks for use later.

There are also passive solar systems. One example of this type of system, is having the sun shine through the windows into your house. The sun would shine on some type of material that has "thermal mass". The thermal mass absorbs the heat from the sun during the day then releases the heat into the house after the sun goes down. Concrete has "thermal mass" and is good at absorbing the heat and releasing it later.

hope that helps
A battery stores the extra energy that is not used when the sun is out, and uses the energy when the sun is not out.
They're stored in batteries. The stored power in the batteries powers the home when weather is bad and night falls.
I live near Phoenix International Airport that has huge solar panels. The energy is stored in batteries. A nuclear technician that spoke to our Physics class, claimed that solar panel units creates more waste in batteries than the waste of a nuclear plant.
A battery stores the energy at night, but even in cloudy weather a solar panel is still gathering energy.
There are two ways to power a house when the solar polar system cannot handle the load.

"Off grid" houses use storage batteries, very similar to car batteries. These are house where electric lines are not available. This is the costly way to do solar.

"On grid" houses use electricity from the power company when solar doesn't work. This is much cheaper. In most cases you can also sell electricity back to the power company when you're not using all your solar power. This is called "net metering". If power lines are available, this is the way to go.
two ways, electrical is stored in batteries (active)
and heat is also stored in liquid, ie saline, gyclo ect(passive)
