Do you worry about solar storms knocking out satellites?
Question:
Answer:
Yes. The gamma rays and high-energy particles sometimes damage electronic components like microchips. A solar storm can knock out power supplies by causing variations in the Earth's magnetic field which induce power surges in the long power lines, just like a radio signal induces a weak electric current in a receiving aerial.
I think you're worrying too much.
[ADDED] I don't mean to say that there isn't an issue, but the risk you're pointing to is an extremely narrow one, and there are other greater risks with greater consequence with which we should concern ourselves.
dont worry about it because its not something i can do anything about-but i am aware of the potential problems that can be caused-old hippie
Our ozone layer is there to protect us from solar winds along with the magnetic field.
Satelites are designed to handle normal levels of EMI and EMC radiation.
Most news shows love to scare Americans, because they know they can.
NO i think you worry wayyyyyy toooo much! chill out dude!
Why worry about it? Will worrying help with anything like that?
If it does it does - simple as that. As for wreaking havoc on the ozone layer - wow - big shock - something besides people ruins ozone?? We have seen now by watching the ozone layer a little longer that the ozone layer builds and depletes in a 30-40 year cycle which is 3 or 4 times the length of the solar cycle (11 years). Cutting back on CFCs couldn't possibly have had this recovery effect that we've seen - because worldwide use of CFCs is higher now than when they were banned, because exempt countries like China and India are using more than ever.
Canadians have power?
I don't. I don't have any.
It is a worry but it is something that happens with pretty much every solar storm so it usually isn't too bad.
The biggest worry is in manned spaceflight, particularly any Mars missions that might be undertaken.
The Ozone layer isn't really affected much by solar storms AFAIK.
