Could someone provide the basic setup (design) for a solar/wind powered barn.?
Question:
Answer:
Here is a quote from a solar panel provider, which indicates that the use of solar panels either for home, boat, outbuilding (read: barn) is possible, and they sell 'em:
"DIY Solar Panel kits
"These low cost, general-purpose kits are an economical, clean way to provide extra power to caravans, boats and outbuildings. The multi-crystalline panels are glass-fronted and aluminium framed, and come with a free heavy duty canvas bag for storage and portability. Kits (except 10W) include a Suntech charge controller and all necessary cables and connectors.
"Depending on your solar energy requirements we have five different sizes of solar panel, they are : 5W, 10W, 18W, 28W, & 43W." (http://www.sailgb.com/p/diy_solar_panel_...
On solar power and wind generators, here's an article you may enjoy from Mother Earth News, 1981: http://www.motherearthnews.com/library/1...
There is alot of watts required for those tools.
there is a common formula for how big your system needs to be.
The lighting is nothing if you get florescent. the watts are very low and the light is quite bright.
a little costly for the bulbs.
if, you are doing the wiring to an inverter/charger
you are going to have surges with those power tools and an inverter is obviously needed to change the power from DC to AC
with solar panels only:
you need solar panels. mobile is better to move it with the sun and track it.
trackers are costly and hard to find so you might want to rig up your own style.
then you need a charge controller.
with a dc disconnect for safety[plus electrical code calls for it]
then, you have your battery bank. oversize and then you won't drain your batties as fast and the life of them will be longer.
then, you need your DC load breaker panel.
at the dc disconnect you branch off with the inverter/charger and add an inverter bypass and then the inverter AC subpanel and then after the inverter bypass you need your main AC breaker panel.
windmills;
they are volient and unpredictable.
most models only work in high wind conditions. and shut themselves down when it gets too high a speed[silly saftey feature that are built in] be aware of that also.
if, you want to go totally off grid
you need 1kw solar panels, with AC panel and battery bank, and the power board and then the optional generator.
alot of different ways to go.
i know of a dealer in British Columbia Canada. He is a great guy.

he will sell to anyone instead of going through a electrical company that specializes in wind/solar power systems.
these are just ideas not to be followed step by step
[I am a female co-owner to a solar home system and still learning as we go]
**what we like?. being the first people on the street with the solar system****
best of luck
hope i didnt confuse you more.
