Thermostat, solar heating:?

Question:
there is a buzzing, tapping sound when the thermostat is set on auto and the pump is on. when set on manual and pump is on, there's no sound. would appreciate an answer before calling a repairman. thank you.

Answer:
The buzzing, tapping(like a vibrating hum)is most likely the contactor relay--this device will have 2 thin wires connected to the contactor relay(24 volts)plus other 120/240 volts to pump. The contactor may be loose in it"s mounting/ants-bugs foiling the contact points(yes)bad wire connection-try to tighten mounting screws 1st-or replace contactor.Turn main power off 1st.
Heat is introduced (or not) into the long term passive storage system directly. from the solar loop, according to the thermostat call for heat. ...
