Should i go with a 12v or 24 volts system for solar energy?

I have a small cabin and running solar panels. I can either go with a 12v or 24 v system. the solar panels are on the roof and not far from the battery packs. Is that the only reason to go 24 v is for distance?

Answer:
The higher the voltage the lower the current that needs to flow, in proportion. Higher current means higher voltage drop over all the wiring so 24V would be a better bet for technical reasons. Rememer the wiring between battery and point of use.

The only problem is the availability of 24 volt gear. You can probably find a 12 Volt radio easily, maybe a truck radio at 24 volt is available, 24 volt lamps -well perhaps, but two 12 volt ones in series will hack it. Anything much over 30 volts you have to be much more careful of since the possibility of fatal shock becomes real.
