When will solar power cost effective for generating electricity comparing to traditional means?

Question:
As i understand it, solar power generated electricity still are not competitive, and require subsidies to be competitive. How much is the cost difference nowadays? When will it be competitive w/o subsidies? What is the likelihood that this will ever happen? With what kind of technology?

Answer:
it will be cost effective when researchers find a way to minimize the input energy vs the output energy, by that i mean when they get about twice as much energy out than what they spent in. (perhaps 1.5 times more) but the more the better... other sources seem more promissing at the moment.
at preaent, scientist and engineers are already looking for source of regenerative power. you mentioned one. this regenerative sotces of power will be economically feasible when the oil supply will be depleted
