There can be serious problems with communications, and even power grids depending on the flux coming from the sun.
There have been massive power failures, particularly in northern areas (in 1989, 6 million people in Canada and Sweden lost power for 9 hours + because of the solar wind).
There are huge currents induced on transoceanic telephone cables that have melted large cables and connectors. The solar wind can make the atmosphere expand tremendously, due to heating, and the drag can bring down extremely expensive satellites. The solar wind brought down Skylab in 1989 for example. The solar wind can of course fry the delicate electronics on the satellites.
I don't think theres an effect
That would depend on the magnitude of the winds. On occation there are power surges, tragetories of spacecraft are effected. In general though not enough gets through our Magnetosphere to affect our communications.
Yes, it can lead to minor problems to major collapse of communication satellite. Galaxy 4, a communication satellite was one victim of solar winds.

Solar winds consist mainly of protons and electrons of lower energy. During periods of low solar activity, protons escape from the sun on the order of 5 protons per cm^3 with velocities approximately 400 km/sec. The mean flux at earth's orbit is 2*10^8 protons/cm^2 with a mean energy of several kilo electron-volts. During periods of intense solar activity, proton fluxes with energies between several MeV and several hundreds MeV are released. On the order of several years, the proton energy can reach GeV.
The Van Allen belts lie between the earth and Geostationary orbit. The protons are trapped in the outer belt with a maximum concentration around 1.5 - 2.0 earth radii. The geostationary orbit at 6.6 earth radii is within the outer electron belt and outside the belt of trapped protons. Geostationary satellites are thus mainly affected by electrons of the outer belt and high energy protons generated by solar flares.
When subjected to charged particles, metals and semiconductors undergo excitation of the electron levels of the atoms. Plastics are ionised and insulating minerals undergo both effects.
Solar flares particularly affect the minority carriers in semiconductors, the optical transmission of glasses and certain polymers. The principal effects of high energy particals appear as degradation of solar cells which are directly exposed to the flux and modification of thermo-optical characteristics of surfaces which affect thermal control.

As a practical matter, when large solar storms are predicted, satellites may be commanded to stow their solar arrays. Depending on the length of the disturbance, available battery power, and operational considerations, they may be run on batteries or may be taken off-line.
I'm taking an Earth Science course, and from the limited knowledge i have, i believe that since these winds, made up of ionized particles will possibly be detrimental towards the communications that we have.

The solar winds have a big impact on High Frequency (HF) communications (also known as short wave). HF communications are use extensivily for long range communincations, say between aircraft and ground controllers when the planes are flying across the Atlantic Ocean. The solar winds will disrupt the ionisphere, causing a near breakdown in HF communications.
For shortwave communications solar winds do have a noticable effect. For cell phones there are neglible effects due to the fact that we have complicated protocols to remove error effects. Plus the distance between basestation and handsets are not far enough to cause a great deal of concern. CDMA and digital encoding also helps.
Some power grids are effected by the solar winds. Hydro Quebec for example had a complete collapse of their grid the last time there was a big flare up from the sun. They have subsequently made modifications to their power grid so that this doesn't happen again.

These can increase the forward bias of very tiny transistors causing burn out of these very small components, electrostatic effects can also cause damage or temporary failure from shorts and surges. Even partial damages in this vital equipment is much unwanted.
Various measures are taken to 'harden' the equipment against these effects; additionally, shutting it down during a bad 'solar storm' can prolong useful life and optimum function. Lots of 'surge' protection circuitry just like you use for your home computer...

Communication is badly effected b'cause communication depends upon electromagnetic waves reflected by satelites/transponders which are frequently interfered by solar winds. Normaly solar flairs occuring every 11 yrs. affect the communication system badly.

There is usually a strong correlation between solar wind speed and planetary magnetism. As solar eruptions (such as Coronal Mass Ejections) occur and spew out protons at very high speeds, earth sometimes crosses their path if the eruption is in a location on the Sun that is facing Earth. This proton-filled "solar wind" then impacts the Earth's magnetic field and compresses it. The interaction of these protons with the Earth's magnetic field generally increases the planetary magnetism.
Increased planetary magnetism can affect electronic devices, including communications and electric power distribution. Sometimes the planetary magnetism increases to such an extent that communications are interrupted and power systems break down. Space travel can be seriously affected and satellite communications can be damaged. While the effect on human physical functions on the surface of the Earth is not well documented, sensitive people have reported headaches, light-headedness, nausea, and a variety of tingling sensations during periods of high planetary magnetism.
The following charts for the year 2001 show a strong correlation between the two factors of solar wind speed and planetary magnetism. There are some noticeable exceptions, however, one of which was the U.S. Inauguration Day on January 20th. During that day, solar wind speed was about the lowest reading for the year. However, the planetary magetism index shot up to 48 on that day, then up to 78 on the following day; solar wind speed does not account for that jump. Another interesting exception in on January 26th. On that day, solar wind speed had died down considerably, but the planetary magetism index shot up to 60 for no apparent reason. It is on that day also that there was a devastating 7.9 earthquake in southern India, with several major aftershocks.
