When is the next total solar eclipse due?
Question:
Answer:
Hi Wesel!
The next total eclipse visible from England will not be until September 23, 2090. The path of totality, very late that autumn afternoon, runs across Cornwall and the edge of the English Channel coast.
One writer also suggested the eclipse in the Channel Islands, the morning of September 3, 2081, but this one will not be visible from the British mainland, except as a partial eclipse.
So we need something sooner for you. The very next solar eclipse of any kind in the Northern Hemisphere will be visible in England as a very slight partial eclipse next year, August 1, 2008, around 10 a.m., but not even 40% of the solar disc will be covered, even in northern Scotland, which sees the greatest eclipse. (As another writer said, this one is total in the Arctic and Siberia).
The best one that people in England can see in the short-run will be January 24, 2011. The crescent sun will rise in the southeast, almost 80% eclipsed. Because of the low altitude, you'll be able to look right at the rising solar crescent, if the sky isn't overcast that morning.
The next near-by total solar eclipse you could travel to is March 20, 2015 in the Faroe Islands.
Maybe you'd prefer a lunar eclipse. Britain is in a good position to see the one this February 21st, 2008. The partial eclipse starts in the wee hours, at 1:43 a.m., with totality commencing at 3 a.m.

The last total solar eclipse was just on 3-28-06. The next total eclipse,on August 1, 2008, will be seen in northern Canada, Greenland, Siberia, Mongolia and northern China. It will last about 2 minutes. The next total eclipse visible from the United States won’t happen until August 21, 2017.

The next total solar eclipse in the world will be on 1st August 2008, but the path is not too good for viewing as it runs across the far north, down through Russia and into China.
The next nearest on to England will be on March 20th, 2015 which tracks across the sea to the north of Scotland between the UK and Iceland.
After that we are out to 3rd September 2081, and even that one just misses Cornwall but can be seen in the Channel Islands.
The next one on the UK mainland I'm afraid is 23rd September 2090.
Trick answer: Solar eclipses happen all the time, and always, provided that you are in the correct spot to see it. All you need to do is travel in space or on the planet to where the moon blocks the sun. Simple.
