solar flares have messed up electrical lines causing blackouts, can also screw up the sattelites
May 28, 1877 - It was observed as an arch that moved halfway to the zenith from New York City. Following a dramatic exhibition of curtains, waves and shooting rays extending to zenith, the display faded after 10:00 PM. Telegraph lines were affected from Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington DC.



August 28, 1859 - The Superstorm. - This storm was observed world-wide and is, historically, one of the greatest events recorded in the last 150 years. Extensive eyewitness accounts and scientific studies, telegraph disturbances and the unique sighting of a spectacular solar flare make this event one of the most interesting solar storms to read about.
