I am a graduating electrical engineering student, how can a prepare myself for a job in the finance industry?
Question:
The main problem I have is that I am holding an eng degree with 2 yrs of eng experience. I am not the biggest fan of engineering, and I am quite lost in terms of career choice. I had the chance to see what the finance world is like, and the fast-paced environment with the money incentive seems perfect for me.
Going into finance might mean a starting salary of $35-45K, and that's a big difference when I can command $50-60K with my eng background. I have a strong interest in following the market, and investment. Am I wrong for making such big career switch? Is there anyone out there with similar experience and would like to share with me?
Answer:
Well I am a civil engineer that never practiced civil engineering except for 4 years in the beginning of my career. I went into computer programming, much more enjoyable, with only one college class in the subject.
Now I trade equities full time with no finance training at all. I use common sense more than anything else and I make considerably more than 35k and considerably more than 50k also but some years are much better than others.
You do not have to go into finance to trade equities. You can do that on your own. And most equity traders do not have finance degrees.
You could go back to college and work on an MBA with emphasis on finance. Many have done such as that.
You may not need to enter MBA program, but you you can ask BA professors at the University for advice.
