Will simply pushing the power button on the front of the XBox 360 to shut it down damage the unit or is it perfectly fine to do? I know on computers you are supposed to go to the start menu and then shut it down through that procedure and the 360 is a computer isn't it? I just want to make sure I treat my Xbox 360 like gold cause I invested so much money into it. So how is the best way to turn the XBox 360 off?

you can just shut it down if you want to but it is recommended to hold down the button in the middle of the controller and go to turn off console so the button does not were out
don't shut it down
Just press the button
Because it will be in a hibernating state and u will recive messages and stuff
