Just open a brokerage account in US Dollars in etrade.com to trade US based ETFs.
You can also open a brokerage account in https://uk.etrade.com to trade US Based ETFs.
However. I don't have to tell you everything is more expensive in the UK.
Consult with your Accountant the taxes you have to pay in your country.
In the United States of America you don't have to pay any taxes if you are British.
If you want to invest on margin you need a minimum of $2,000.00 USD
If you want to invest just with your own cash you can open an account with just $1,000.00 USD
ETFs are for 1/10th of a Gold Ounce. Therefore currently it cost less than $50
However, it does not make any economic sense to buy just $50 in gold because you have to pay $10 to buy it and $10 to sell it. Therefore if Gold goes up 40% this year you don't make any money.
On the other hand if you buy $100 in gold you only have to wait until it goes up 20% in a year to make a profit.
You get the idea.
There are ETFs also trading in the UK.
