Answer:
You already answered your own question. Start with your credit union first.
CU's, especially if you have a history with them, are great for this kind of stuff. They'll probably give you a low limit unsecured card. If not, ask about a secured card, where you borrow money you've deposited with them. Great way to get started.
Ask your parents about being added as an authorized user to one of their biggest limit, lowest usage credit cards. If that reports to the credit bureau, you could get a good boost in credit rating.
CU's will also be your best place for a first car loan, especially if you have credit with them already. A dealership will charge you 18% on your first car. A CU might charge 8%. HUGE difference.
And CU's charge lower rates than banks on most cards. Once you're older, have a deeper history, you'll start getting offers from other banks that might be cheaper still. But that will take time.
Well, when I turned 18 I used $500 to set up a secured loan. Basically I put my $500 in a 'savings' account along with the banks $500 and it paid its self off. It was a great way to get installment debt on my bureau. After I had that I began getting offers from Capital One & I got a card through there. My APR was 21% but hey, it was a credit card, and you're not going to get any better. Don't apply at a bunch of places, give yourself time to build your credit, inquiries effect you way negatively.
I would have to say DEFFINITLY Capital One, they always accept people who has bad credit or no credit history. I suggest start there, use 90% of your credit line, make payments on time, and after some time request for credit line increase, when you have at least 6 months of credit history and over $1000 credit line, other companies will offer you their credit cards. Maybe you can try below website to get the information. It's about credit card articles for your second opinion
Discover was my first card and my interest was a bit high but not as high as my second which was USBANK (I DO NOT RECOMMEND becuase it was 23%) and my third, final and cheapest card is CapitalONE... good luck!
