If you look back on it, Gold has provided a good steady rate of return over the years. It is currently very high in value.
It is also one more way to diversify a portfolio, as it doesn't always follow the same cycles of the stock market or real estate.
they are paranoid that the inflation will skyrocket. and that the sky will start falling on their head.

At the very least scripture says gold ,silver etc. will be the only forms of trade in the end times . And it's a great investment, looking to the past those who held gold always came Thur on top

It is arguably a sounder investment to buy tangible things like gold (a non reactive precious metal) than to depend on fiat currency constantly being tinkered with by the Fed. There are some convincing arguments along the lines of taking us back to a metal standard if you read a bit.
Gold is a hedge against inflation and is a constant during changing and dangerous times. Are we in dangerous times?
