Looking for a shotgun for home defense?
Question:
http://www.remington.com/products/firear... -will this be a wise choice of investment? What price range would you expect to pay and should I use a combination of buckshot and slugs? Any info is appreciated as I am still learning about shotguns.
Answer:
lord guy, your not thinking at all right, buckshot and slugs INSIDE the house? how many of your family are you looking to kill?I'd recommend a much smaller shot, something in the line of goose shot or something that's less likely to go through walls and kill the wrong people. just looked at the weapon in question, and it Seriously unneeded. get a mossberg 500, you'll have 5 rounds. if you can;'t get the job done with 5, your better off without a weapon, cus the criminals just gonna take it away from you. good luck to your family, cus i think their gonna need it
Great Shotgun, check at pawn shops for a bargain.
you had better hurry to get one the liberal trash have allready started on the banning binge
If you have children I would go with buckshot for home defense, slugs tend to penetrate several walls and may strike a child or even a neighbor. I myself lean towards 45. cal pistols such as the M1911A1 or other such models as they are easily cared for have three safeties and the round has plenty of stopping power and shouldnt penetrate like a 9mm will. If you hit someone with a 45. slug anywhere except the hand, they will go down no matter if they are on drugs or not.
Consider Saiga-12 semi-automatic.
Kalashnikov design is the best in reliability.
In today’s day and age, if someone breaks into your home and you need to use deadly force to defend yourself, your better off in the long run if you kill them. If you shoot them and they live they can and will sue.
Therefore, I say why take chances. Unless you're only interested in shotguns, I say look at this rifle. It’s called a 45/70 and is basically a land cannon. My buddy has one and when I fired it I couldn't believe the power it had. It doesn't have a kick so much as it has a really big push. It's a lever action 45 cal rifle that takes 300 and 400 grain rounds.
It was designed to kill anything in North America.
You shoot anyone with that and I guarantee they won't survive.
Check it out.
Why don't you go to a Radio Shack and look into the wireless cameras that you can place outside of your house. The monitor and tape would be running inside.
Get a can of Hornet and Wasp killer from Raid, It will do the same thing to a human as it does to Hornets and Wasps, 25 feet range with no wall penetration to worry about.
Buy you a semi-auto 12 gage with a modified choke around 20 - 24 inch barrel you will have 5 rounds to use and DON'T use Buck shot in the house or slugs. Bird shot at close range will Kill and not penetrate any walls with enough power to kill any innocent people.

You need a Mossberg 500 or Winchester 870. The sound of a shotgun being pumped should be enough to ward off any intruder. But just in case, load it with bird shot. It will likely kill or seriously injure the guy, but it won't over penetrate through walls and doors.
Oh, and keep a realistic looking toy gun in the house, sealed in a ziploc. After you shoot the intruder dead, put this toy gun in his hand. It will make your case a bit easier to defend in court, should it come to that.
Fine choice. You'll get arguments on whether to use 00 or 4 buckshot, but slugs are a bit much. You don't want to destroy everything for a hundred yards behind the bad guy. I've treated enough shotgun wounds to be in the smaller shot camp, by the way.
Outstanding self defense weapon. The 870 has been around for over 30 years.
Swear to the Almighty, most of the respondents have never fired a gun. If you're concerned about home defense, you're talking about a shot from 8-15 feet down a hallway. At this range, the pattern for # 6 gauge shot will be completely absorbed by the assaulting body. Anything heavier (God forbid a slug) may go through walls and hurt your loved ones.
They're in your house. It's not the O. K. Corral. Bird shot works great at close range. A pump gun lets them know you're there. That's great for a humanitarian. I'll get the first shot off with no warning!
I personally habve a Mossberg 590A1, which features a heavy gauge barrel, Ghost Ring sights and is as reliable as a railroad watch.
Mossberg claims the Model 500 is the only shotgun to pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test, "a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot". The updated 3443G specification requires a metal trigger guard, so only the Model 590A1 variants, which have a heavier barrel and use metal trigger groups instead of the standard Model 500's plastic trigger groups, will fit the requirements.
And the Mossberg 500 is in use with the US Army, US Marines (along with the Benelli M1014) and the US Navy.
Are you planning close combat ? This is primarily what shotguns are designed for. The effective killing range of a shotgun is measured in feet, rather than yards or klicks. You might want to consider something with long range killing power, such as a 30cal. O3 - Springfield, M-1 Girand, or a M-14. These are all available through armory's around the country, but unless you're planning trench warfare, stay away from shotguns !
