Things one can do before starting MBA?
Question:
I am 24/male/IT, the most competitive area for today's indian graduates. Presently i am working as a developer for a Fortune 500 company at New Delhi. I want to pursue my MBA, but i plan to do it after two years. I want to get into atleast one of the top 50 (world) schools. I am yet to give my GMAT and i am delaying it because i do not want my score to get outdated. Could you please suggest me that what do i do, apart from completing GMAT with a good score, so that it may help me into getting my MBA degree from school i desire. I have plenty of time after i complete my job so please let me know if there are any specific courses or some books or anything else that i can go through which would help me in my admissions.

Answer:
1. Download the application packages at some of the b-school websites. Take a look at the admission essay questions. You'll need to do well in this area to distinguish yourself from others especially if you are weak in any other areas.
2. I would also talk to as many current students and MBA graduates from the schools you're interested as possible. In your application or essay, you can mention that you've talked to John Doe (Class of 199X) of their business school, it shows your sincere interest in their school. Business is about your network and b-school is no different. The more people you know from these top schools that are willing to speak positively for you, the better your chances of getting in. I would even write to the admissions officers.
3. Keep current with b-school trends. Understand what kind of students they are looking for. Business Week is a good source. Also check out princeton review, kaplan, wetfeet.com, and vault.com.
