What would you tell your manager if he or she asked you to explain each one of these to him or her?

Question:

You are a manager in a large, global manufacturing and services organization. You're trying to explain to your grandfather how different your job is from his. You both know how society has changed and and you want to explain how that has changed management. post your thoughts on how management has changed with respect to one of the following areas:

Organizational culture
The outside environment
Globalization
Corporate responsibility and ethics
Society and trends (such as diversity)

that would require just too much thought. I'd just bring grandpa to work with me for a day and let him see all those things for himself.

put it in the category that works best for you, but i would try to explain how fast things can happen, and how some slow decisions can be more expensive than a wrong decision, and then a correction.

biz between companies & cities & countries (big decisions) used to happen by letter, then telegraph, then telephone, then fax, then computer email, now by IM on a Blackberry.

Also , that a manager's job used to be 9 to 5 or whatever. In many companies, you may be on call 24 hours, and you are expected to be available on your vacation, even though you are at a resort in Bali for 3 weeks.

I would say its all corporate crap. Things are not like they used to be. I think in the old days they had it write, now corporate america just makes you jump through a bunch of hoops of fire. It's really sad. Words like culture, diversity, best practices and corporate responsibility. Really, people built successful companies when grandpa was younger without that.
